Stones to Stains: The Drawings of Victor Hugo
September 27–December 30, 2018 – All Day
Known for his novels and plays, Victor Hugo was also a practiced draftsman who painted experimental works on paper. Over 3,000 sheets of Hugo’s ink and wash drawings exist today, although the writer’s visual art seemed a private endeavor and rarely displayed during his lifetime. The exhibition presents over 75 select drawings and photographs from major European and American public and private collections, including the Maison de Victor Hugo, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and several other institutions.
