A tar and petroleum-based, viscous liquid, it’s also known as pitch and is used in the construction of asphalt roads. Bitumen was a widely-used paint additive during the turn of the 20th century, for creating dark tones and depthless blacks on the canvas. Contemporary painter, Nicholas Broughton, often uses bitumen to both deepen and accent the blacks in his works.
