The Jefferson Bottles 1787
The Jefferson Bottles 1787: Found behind a bricked-up cellar in Paris in 1985 with the initials “TJ” etched roughly onto the bottles, it is thought this wine belonged to Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was the US minister to France from 1785 to the French Revolution. According to the catalog, evidence suggested that the wine had belonged to Thomas Jefferson and that the bottle at auction could “rightly be considered one of the world’s greatest rarities.” The level of the wine was “exceptionally high” for such an old bottle—just half an inch below the cork—and the color “remarkably deep for its age.” The wine’s value was listed as “inestimable.” Jefferson is regarded as America’s first great wine connoisseur.
