Marilyn Monroe with a Pekingese Dog
Based on a 1955 photograph of the iconic American actress, model and singer, Mara Sfara’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe depicts the star with her Pekingese dog. Although the subject is beaming in this painting, Sfara notes that the work also nods to the many hardships that the actress endured and concealed behind a joyful demeanor, including her desire and inability to have a child. “Marilyn is holding a Pekingese dod similar to the way a person holds a baby. She desperately wanted a baby, but never had one” explains the artist. Sfara notes that Monroe’s story remains relevant today, especially during COVID-19 pandemic when loss is common.
