David & David
Extraordinary paintings on the reverse of glass. Glass painting is well known from past times and there are multiple testimonies of its production from the Renaissance era in places such as Venice and Murano. Its origins, however, are unknown. Once the glass plate is melted, the painting is finished - presenting a characteristic smooth appearance. Glass is a liberating material in the eyes of David. With this material, he becomes the manipulator of the pictoric matter. Crystallisation takes place and it is clear that, beyond the theme, the technique offers infinite possibilities in regards to color and form. Cholet - France, 1976. The paintings by David & David are especially unique for their technique and materials: they are painted in reverse, on glass; the subject is therefore worked backwards. Quite extraordinary, the motifs are often sexy and dream-like, and always a pleasure to share. The Artist’s first contact with monotypes, pastels and lithograph engraving techniques was at the College of Fine Arts, where painting on canvas never ceased to be a part of his language. A year into his studies and captivated by Svankamyer’s films and the Czech School of Animation, he decided to focus on animation projects. Two films were born thanks to this passion; one of them made on a glass plate. He took part in competitions with these entries and obtained a number of awards. Resulting from this, he continued to engrave images of his films onto glass plates for exhibition. With no help from galleries or other institutions, he would simply head for the Atlantic Coast to sell his pieces every summer. During this time he met a blacksmith and teamed up to join wrought iron to his glass engravings, creating one-off furniture pieces and starting a new creative period.
